As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Al-hamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Alameen, was-salatu was-salam ‘ala rasuulillah

We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our evil deeds. Whomever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomever Allaah leaves astray, none will guide. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.

To proceed:

Indeed, one of the greatest blessings of this life is Islamic knowledge. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has said: “When Allaah wishes good for a person, He makes him understand the religion.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Vol. 1, No. 71)

It was also reported that Muadh ibn Jabal (radhi Allahu anhu) said: “Seek knowledge, because seeking it for the sake of Allah is a worship. And knowing it makes you more God fearing; and searching for it is jihad, teaching it to those who do not know is charity, reviewing and learning it more is like tasbeeh. Through knowledge, Allah will be known and worshipped. With the knowledge Allah will elevate people and make them leaders and imams, who will in turn guide other people.” (Fatawa Ibn Taymiyya vol.10, p.39)

Imam Shafi’ie (rahimahullah) said regarding knowledge: “Whoever seeks the fruits of this life should gain Islamic knowledge, and whoever seeks the hereafter should gain (Islamic) knowledge.” (An-Nawawi, Majmoo’ vol.1, p.12)

Not everything a scholar says may be correct, for it is known that everyone makes mistakes. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) has said: “Every son of Adam makes mistakes, and the best of those who make mistakes are those who repent.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no. 2499, and by Ibn Maajah, who narrated this version – al-Sunan, ed. by ‘Abd al-Baqi, no.4251)

Based upon this, one should examine the scholar’s words to see if it complies with the truth or not. If one is not aware, but later finds out that there is stronger evidence against what this scholar is saying, he is required to leave the saying of the scholar and take that which has stronger evidence.

One is also advised that if he comes across an opinion, which is unsupported by proofs, he should research the subject matter and find the truth of the matter. Just because a scholar has a correct opinion in one matter, does not necessarily mean he will be correct for every single matter. It may also seem that someone has a lot of knowledge and looks like a scholar, but in reality he could be an ignorant person or an evil scholar who hides the truth for worldly gains.

‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al’ As (radhi Allahu anhu) narrated: “I heard Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saying, “Allah does not take away the knowledge, by taking it away from (the hearts of) the people, but takes it away by the death of the religious learned men till when none of the (religious learned men) remains, people will take as their leaders ignorant persons who when consulted will give their verdict without knowledge. So they will go astray and will lead the people astray.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari Vol. 1, No. 100)

And also, from Abdullah Ibn Mas’ood (radhi Allahu anhu) who said: “How will you be when You are covered by a trial in which the young grow up and the old become infirm. If anything of it is abandoned it is said: The Sunnah has been abandoned. It was said: When will that occur, O Abu Abdur Rahman? He said: When your scholars pass away, and those ignorant amongst you become many; when those who recite amongst you are many, but those who have understanding of the religion are few; when your leaders are many, but those who are trustworthy are few; when this world is sought with actions of the Hereafter; and when knowledge is sought for other than the Religion.” (Reported by ad-Daarimee 1/64, al-Laalikaa’ee no.123, al-Haakim 4/514 and others, with saheeh chain of narration)

And on the authority of ‘Ali (radhi Allahu anhu) that he made mention of trials occurring at the end of time. ‘Umar (radhi Allahu anhu) asked him: “When will that be O ‘Ali?” He said: “When understanding of the religion is sought for other purposes and knowledge is acquired for other than acting upon, and worldly gain is sought with the actions of the Hereafter.” (Reported by ‘Abdur-Razzaaq in his Mussannaf as a statement of ‘Ali. It is also in Saheeh

at-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb, no. 106)

It is also reported on the authority of Zayd Ibn Arqam (radhi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) used to say: “O Allah I seek refuge in you from knowledge which does not benefit, from a heart which does not feel humble, from a soul that does not feel contended and from an invocation that is not answered.” (Reported by Muslim, Eng. trans. Vol. 4, Hadeeth No. 6568)
